Beware New Orleans, The King of Pain has begun his reign.
Last night’s mid-season finale of ‘The Originals’ examines Klaus’ realization that he is a ruler without the skills to effectively run his new kingdom, and he needs help. Cue the calculated manipulation of family and foes.
The episode opens with Klaus (Joseph Morgan) toasting his inner circle to celebrate the what they have, in both victory and defeat, a community of vampires. Klaus looks to Marcel (Charles Michael Davis) who has a flashback conversation with Rebekah (Claire Holt) about having doubts Klaus will ever trust him, seeing that Marcel tried to bury him. Rebekah asks Marcel to promise her that he will do everything he can to stay alive, which means faking loyalty and allegiance to Klaus. Return to the present and Klaus toasts to his new kingdom where the blood should always flow and Marcel toasts that the party never ends. Diego and Marcel share a knowing look, and Diego (Eka Darville) flashes back to Marcel asking him to trust him; that it isn’t over yet with Klaus. Return again to the present room (Got whiplash yet?) and Diego toasts to New Orleans. Haley, sitting at the end of the long table, refuses to participate. Diego points to Haley (Phoebe Tonkin) and asks about her, and Klaus says he expects them to show her respect. He says he has no intention of creating hybrids with his baby’s blood and to prove it and win their trust, he declares open hunting season on werewolves, to Haley’s horror.
Meanwhile, at the Mikaelson house, Rebekah and Elijah (Daniel Gillies) watch as their furniture is being removed, at Klaus’ request, and moved to his compound. Elijah reminds Rebekah that she’s never paid for anything in her life (after complaining she paid for the furniture) and that Klaus is just punishing them (Great shot of the coffin being removed! He’s taking everything!). Elijah leaves, telling Rebekah that he must make sure that Haley is safe from the vindictive Klaus.
Back at the compound, Klaus is dictating his memoirs to Cami (Leah Pipes) who questions why he’s needing her now he’s got New Orleans back. Marcel enters at that moment, surprised to see Cami there. Klaus assures Marcel it’s all right, that Cami knows everything about them, which she confirms, and says Klaus compels her to forget that she’s spying for him, when she leaves. Marcel asks if he compelled her to go out with and like him, to which Klaus says no, just for her to give him a second chance; the feelings part was up to Cami. This creates an awkward moment between Cami and Marcel which Klaus masterfully points out (good one, Klaus). Cami shows him the picture from 1919 and confronts him about messing around with her sanity. Klaus then compels her to forget the picture and “their lives as vampires”, and then he dismisses her.
Elsewhere at the compound, Rebekah and Elijah take out Haley’s “bodyguard” vamps as she walks the grounds, and ask her to come with them. She refuses and instead asks that they stop the slaughter of the werewolves in the Bayou, ordered by Klaus. Haley says if they want to help her, to help her family that she has just now found. Meanwhile, Marcel lets Klaus know that the humans have called a meeting. He advises Klaus that politics and diplomacy helped Marcel build what he had. Klaus says he duly notes his advice. Klaus then tells Marcel he has some things to confess to him, in the interest of new beginnings. First confession is that he set up Thierry, who really is his friend, and that he can return to the compound at Marcel’s discretion. Second, Cami’s role he just learned about. Third, Klaus had been compelling Joshua since the start but suspected Marcel already knew (and he confirmed it) since it was Joshua who led Klaus into Marcel’s ambush. Fourth, Davina made a deal with Elijah during his captivity, that she would stay in the attic in exchange for spells from their mother’s grim memoir. He suggests that Davina move into the compound. Marcel seems shaken by Davina’s actions.
Cami returns to her apartment and sees post-it notes warning her not to believe what Klaus tells her. One note instructs her to look inside her purse pocket. She pulls out a voice recorder and when she plays it back, she hears Klaus dictating his memoirs. She reacts in disbelief.
Meanwhile, in the attic at St. Anne’s, Marcel tells Davina (Danielle Campbell) he’ll be moving her out to the compound and when she refuses, he says he knows all about her deal with Elijah and they can’t be lying to each other. He says she’ll be safest with him since all the witches want her for the Harvest (conveniently forgeting to mention that won’t be possible now!). Enter Klaus, who tells her that Marcel is devoted to him and he assumes she wants what’s best for all of them. Klaus leaves for the meeting with the humans, downstairs. Marcel asks an angry Davina to trust him.
Downstairs at St. Anne’s, the meeting of the humans starts off rocky with the mayor of New Orleans laying out just what is expected of Klaus and Marcel. This includes lining the pockets of the mayor and the police chief so that Klaus and the “freaks” can do whatever they want without interference from them. Father Kieran (Todd Stashwick) tries to be the voice of reason and says they can co-exist peacefully with a few rules. The police chief inserts that Klaus will answer to them if the rules aren’t followed, to which Klaus responds that they will be grateful with whatever he gives them and if not, he’ll decide “when they’ve outlived their usefulness” (The challenge has been thrown down!).
At the werewolves encampment, Rebekah and Elijah confront Diego and the vampire gang to back off and send them on their way. Eve (Tasha Ames) appears and tells them that there is a section of the encampment that may interest them; the wolves are not her or Haley’s descendents, however.
Back at the compound, Davina finds a frightened Joshua (Steven Krueger) hiding out in the garage full of early model cars. He confesses he’s afraid of Klaus because he’s the one that led him into Marcel’s trap. Davina promises him that if Klaus hurts him, she will hurt Klaus. Enter Haley who challenges Davina on that promise. Haley introduces herself and identifies Davina as the super witch and Joshua as the newbie vampire. She suggests that it would be bad if Klaus knew Davina and Joshua were lurking around, so maybe the three of them could look out for each other.
At Cami’s apartment, Father Kieran meets a freaked out Cami. He notices notes and books scattered on her coffee table. She plays the recording of her meeting with Klaus for him and says she doesn’t remember it happening. She’s convinced Klaus is erasing her memory. Kieran gets a phone call and has to leave, saying he’ll talk with her about it later.
Meanwhile, a fiery explosion rips through the bar where Marcel, Klaus, and some of the vampire gang are hanging out. Marcel and Klaus survive, but some vamps are burned to death, despite efforts by Marcel and others to douse them with fire extinguishers. Klaus then gets a call from the human committee warning him that this is what happens when he won’t listen. An angry Marcel says he and Klaus should go kill them all.
At St. Anne’s, Father Kieran tells the human committee that what they’ve done will start a war. The police chief scoffs at him and says he’s been away too long and they’ve got everything under control. He doesn’t care what Klaus’ reputation is, and demands that Kieran call no further meetings. Kieran denies calling the meeting, and Klaus appears and says he did. Klaus kills the police chief then he and Marcel kill the mayor and the rest of the committee. Marcel convinces Klaus that Kieran is better to them alive than dead and a plus is that he’s Cami’s uncle, so Klaus lets him live. (Pulling on heart strings, Marcel?) Klaus tells Kieran to get together a new committee of leaders and he’ll open new negotiations.
Back at a werewolf encampment, Elijah and Rebekah find a trailer with no one home.
Rebekah wants Elijah to admit why they’re out there, for him to impress Haley. She asks him if he’s fallen for her. Elijah responds that it’s complicated (Sounds like a Facebook relationship status). They’re interrupted by screams as a male werewolf is chased within feet of them, being attacked by Diego and the vampires. Elijah grabs Diego and tells him and his gang to leave or they will become the hunted, just as Klaus did to them. A defiant Diego spits on the ground in contempt, and they leave. The werewolf/man asks Elijah and Rebekah who they are, as Elijah grabs a ring strung around his neck. Elijah looks at the ring and asks who he is.
Back at the compound, Klaus tells Marcel he’s doing a good job of faking friendship, and reminds him that it used to be real. Marcel says he pledged loyalty to him, not friendship which has to be earned. Klaus says he owes Marcel the whole story, which is, if he didn’t unseat Marcel, the witches were going to kill his unborn baby. At first, he couldn’t care less about the baby but then he recalled how his father held him in contempt and vowed that he would not do the same to his own child. Marcel asks him if this is a “sorry, but nothing personal” admission to what he did. Klaus admits he was jealous of the empire that Marcel created without him and wanted it for himself. Marcel counters that he didn’t do it by himself. He credits Klaus for getting him to come out from underneath his father’s shadow. Klaus taught him that a man is “being defined by no body but himself” (good words to live by). Klaus says he can’t win the community’s love and respect without Marcel, and asks Marcel to rule side by side with him as a friend and a brother. (Yeah, in exchange for…?)
Haley confronts Klaus on killing the werewolves, which she considers as killing her family. He argues that they abandoned her, and says that without the werewolves around, the vampires will have no reason to kill her. He says he is trying to protect her. Haley asks what happens to her once the baby is born and Klaus can’t give her an answer, to which she says she has time to figure out how to pay him back. Haley finds Davina unpacking at the compound and looking for her violin. When she tells Davina to go back and find it, she replies it’s not safe. Haley lands the bombshell that Elijah killed Agnes. Davina thinks Haley is lying because Marcel didn’t tell her. Haley says it’s because he doesn’t want to lose his powerful weapon against the witches. Haley tells Davina she wants her to find the loophole to lift the curse that Marcel put on the werewolves. She tells Davina she wouldn’t lie to get what she wants, unlike Marcel.
Joshua enters as Haley leaves and Davina tells him that it’s dangerous for him to be there. He asks what Haley wanted and Davina asks if he trusts her. She tells him about Agnes being killed but doesn’t know if that’s a lie; Joshua interrupts and says he knows all about Elijah doing it. Davina tells Joshua that Haley is right; Marcel is just using her and that she can’t stay at the compound. She asks his help in getting her out, but he asks her where will she go.
Back at the Mikealson house, Klaus is tinkering on the piano when Elijah and Rebekah return from the Bayou. Klaus says he expects them not interfere when he orders the elimination of the werewolves. Elijah throws him the ring he found on the male werewolf earlier. Elijah asks if he recognizes the ring, that a thousand years ago, their mother had worn. He questioned the werewolf who had it, and it spoke of a legend that a chief of theirs had fathered a child, a son, with a very powerful witch. It was said that the child transformed into something that the clan had never seen before – a werewolf and a vampire. Rebekah tells Klaus they’re trying to make amends with him; that they found the blood line of his true father. She said her and Elijah saved them from being killed by his vampires. Elijah asks him to come home, but Klaus says this is not home; he has claimed their true home which is New Orleans. Elijah accuses him of keeping Haley prisoner and Klaus shows jealousy. Klaus puts down the ring and says even if it is true about the ring, he’s “had enough family for a lifetime; why would he possibly want more”. (big time ouch!) and walks out.
At St Anne’s, Klaus tells Father Kieran he was a bit hasty in ordering the slaughter of some vagabonds (hilarious!) out in the Bayou and doesn’t want the vampires to know that he is protecting the werewolves because it won’t go over very well. Kieran promises to help if Klaus gets Cami to leave town. (Let’s try that one again!)
Cami is listening to the recording again when Klaus appears in her apartment. She accuses Klaus of keeping her around to see who he really is, but he counters that if she knew the real him, it would break her, and she demands that he show her. Klaus “mind melds” with her, showing how he kills and transforms into a werewolf, and the abuse at the hands of his father. Cami is shocked and Klaus tells her that knowing about this world will get her killed and he doesn’t want that. (He has a soft spot for her!) He compels her to leave New Orleans and to forget him, and everything that she has learned.
Meanwhile, Rebekah meets Marcel is secret and tells him that loving Klaus only ends in suffering and death. She accuses him of choosing Klaus over her, again. Marcel counters that he has people to look out for, and with Klaus and Davina by his side, he can and it’s something he can’t turn his back on, not even for her. Rebekah asks him if he remembers what came next in 1919 and their secret. She threatens that she knows the words that will make Klaus hate Marcel for ever and to remember that when he’s embracing his new family. (Oh boy, don’t cross Rebekah!)
Elijah meets Haley on a balcony at the compound and tells her the werewolves are all safe. She tells him that means a lot to her. He tells her to keep her mark covered and she promises. They look like they’re headed for a kiss (awww) but Elijah tells her he must leave. He reappears at the stairs, as Klaus heads up to his room. Elijah tells Klaus he was wrong about accusing him in creating hybrids with the baby, and apologizes. He tells Klaus it’s not easy to love him, and Klaus says he is obstinate to do so. Klaus then tells Elijah that he and Rebekah are welcome to join him at the compound, their family home.
Davina shows up at Cami’s apartment as she’s packing to leave. She tells Cami she doesn’t trust Marcel anymore because he’s lied to her. Cami says she doesn’t know who she is. Davina tells her she’s been compelled, and lets her self into the apartment. She tells Cami she can fix her and it will be painful. She does to Cami what she did to Joshua, breaking Klaus’ compelling spell. Cami screams out in pain.
Now that, was a season finale! Waiting until January 14 will be sheer agony, no doubt. Some things were resolved, some things were definitely ramped up for next season. And then there are questions: Will the secret about 1919 finally be revealed? Will we know why the picture of 1919 is important to Cami? Will Rebekah use her threat to Marcel as leverage? What are those words that will make Klaus hate Marcel? What will happen to Haley when the baby is born, will she return to her family in the Bayou? Will Davina hide out with Cami and help her confront Klaus? Why is Klaus and Father Kieran trying to keep Cami out of New Orleans? What does Klaus not want her to know that could get her killed? Will Klaus seek out his family in the Bayou?
What did you think of last night’s season finale?
