The Vampire Diaries’ Damon (Ian Somerhalder) may have found a way to kill Klaus (Joseph Morgan), but he’ll soon realize that staking him won’t solve his problems. In fact, it might make them worse.

Last we saw Klaus, he and his siblings (save for Rebekah) had fled Mystic Falls after their mother put a binding spell on them. In Thursday’s episode (8/7c, CW), he returns with a way to stay alive.

“He may have found a way [to break the spell] and is looking to implement that plan and free him up from his other siblings,” Morgan tells TVGuide.com. “There’s also the matter of the bag containing 12 white oak stakes capable of killing an Original that needs to be taken care of as soon as possible. So he has a two-pronged attack ready. He needs to break the spell and he needs to get hold of all of those stakes because if even one of them is left he’s in serious trouble.”

Fortunately for Klaus, he has another reason to keep Damon and Stefan (Paul Wesley) from killing him. “We are going to learn a very interesting fact about the Originals’ mythology and the bloodlines of vampires,” Morgan says. “It’s not another loophole to how the Originals can’t be killed, [but] it’s something which has the opposite effect and it raises the threat level right up.”

We like to think we’re pretty tuned in to “The Vampire Diaries” fandom, but when fans went from loving to hate Klaus this season — what with his murderous ways and creepy boxes of dead family members — to sympathizing with (and swooning over) him, we got a little bit of whiplash. He killed Aunt Jenna, you guys!

It’s amazing to see the affect a well-timed love interest can have on viewers’ perception of a character. “This Caroline storyline has really gotten people on board the romantic train with Klaus, hasn’t it?” Joseph Morgan laughs when we bring up the change of heart. “It’s really changed into people desperately wanting them to be together. Imagine if he kills her in the finale? I’d be hated forever, wouldn’t I?”

HuffPost TV chatted with Morgan about Klaus’ plan to reunite his family, his brotherly — yet dangerous — relationship with Stefan and the “TVD” pairing that he thinks is a bit “bizarre.”

I’m excited for this week’s episode for many reasons, but mainly because I know Klaus returns to Mystic Falls.
I know! It’s about time. There was that break, and then there were those two episodes that I wasn’t in so I think everybody is about ready to see Mystic Falls’ resident bad guy come back.
