With Caroline and Tyler (Michael Trevino) experiencing a definite low in their relationship, Tyler has some pretty big decisions coming up. Judging by the fact that Michael Trevino has been home in Los Angeles — not in Atlanta, where they shoot the show — for a rather extended period of time, we’re guessing that Tyler is going to take himself out of the Forwood equation for a period of time.

Everyone’s buzzing about a possible love interest for Klaus (Joseph Morgan), and we couldn’t help but think of Caroline as a distinct possibility. When we spoke with Candice about the chances of a Caroline/Klaus hookup, though, she played coy. “I will say this much — Caroline does have scenes with Klaus in upcoming episodes, and we haven’t really had that before,” she says. “Since becoming a vampire, Caroline has really evolved and found herself. She’s more confident and just a much stronger person. You’re going to see that side of her come out when she starts interacting with Klaus. She’s really come into her own.”

Morgan admits that while Klaus may be interested in Caroline, part of his decision to save her was about winning the affection of people like the Sheriff and Matt. “I think it was a little of both,” he says. “There is definitely an honesty there. I’ve played from the beginning that Klaus is lonely and craves companionship. That’s what the whole of Episode 3 was about, with him and Stefan.”

In terms of his relationship with Caroline, there’s an appeal to Klaus about being a sort of role model. “There’s a sort of appeal in the idea of being a mentor, after being alive a thousand years,” he says. “He wants to let her know the great things about being a vampire. There’s all this art and music and culture that you can expose yourself to, and be a part of. It’s not all just killing.”

Of course, Klaus always has his agenda in the background. “I think there’s always an element where he feels like, ‘What’s this going to get me?’ He operates on that level. But still, I’d like to think that a lot of his relationship with Caroline comes from a genuine place.”

The Vampire Diaries star Joseph Morgan raised quite a few eyebrows at The CW’s TCA panel for their “Bad Ass Boys” earlier today when he insinuated that Klaus may not be as hardened or deliciously evil (as we like to put it!) as he appears, even though the lead-in to that statement was to call Klaus a sociopath. It was such an intriguing statement, and one that we couldn’t help but wonder if it veiled a spoiler, that we had to ask him to elaborate further on what to expect from this “new” Klaus who may have lost part of the upper hand to Stefan (Paul Wesley) and is striking up deals with his once-enemies.

“You know, I think the more we go into this series, the more we’re going to see more layers to [Klaus],” Morgan pointed out. “So certainly there’s a– I wouldn’t say softer, but a more caring side, a more tender side, a more human side that we’re going to see. I don’t think it’s a front that he puts on; I think it’s a switch. I think it’s a choice to say ‘I’m going to tear your head off,’ and it’s in a heartbeat that he switches, you know? It’s really one of the frightening things to a sociopath, which I believe he is. I don’t know that I believe he’s growing in that direction, I just think we’re seeing more. He’s been in Mystic Falls long enough that maybe he’s letting more people in that he didn’t let in before.”

Chills. That’s the only word to describe meeting The Vampire Diaries’ big bad Klaus, aka Joseph Morgan, and it’s a testament to how convincing he is in his ultra-scary, ultra-violent role.

“Sometimes people do get a little kind of shaky I notice,” Morgan tells me of meeting fans. “I’d like to think it’s my frightening demeanor. That’s why I spend a lot of time lurking.”

So what about that spanking-new Klaus and Caroline (Candice Accola) chemistry we saw last night? (Pretty great, right?!) Well, Morgan has some veeerrry interesting things to say, like, oh, you know, “He is falling in love with her.” No big whoop. Plus he dropped scoop on the Stefan-Klaus battle and how long he plans to stay on the show…
